Working Stories
A multinational corporation from the construction industry contacted me for my opinion on the design of courtrooms for a new court. They wanted from me a certification that everything has been done to standards.
To know if the project is working, referring to the standards is not enough, in my opinion. A standard is not a legal obligation, it is only a reference that adapts more or less well depending on the situation. To assess if hearings can be conducted properly in these rooms, I needed to know how a trial is conducted and to identify the needs of people working in such spaces. Therefore, I visited other courts, I question judges, lawyers and clerks.
If these rooms fully complied with the standards, they were so badly designed that no trial could ever have taken place there: benches that prevent prosecutors and lawyers from using their laptops, an off-centre clerk unable to share documents with the parties, a chair so badly chosen that the judge, entangled in his robe, falls to the ground…
My job in a project is to measure the relevance of what is submitted, to make sure that information goes to the right people at the right time, to estimate economic and reputational impacts. And sometimes, to make sure that judges won’t fall off their chairs.
