Working Stories
The Covid 19 pandemic and lockdowns deeply transformed our work, especially with the massive introduction of remote work. Productivity was one of the biggest issues raised. Many companies felt a major contradiction: while employees claim that their productivity improves by working from home, employers collectively see the opposite. This is the dilemma that my employer at the time, a multinational software developer, also faced.
However, an analysis of work processes explained the phenomenon quite simply. Remote work has in fact removed many “hot” regulations, and replaced them with “cold” planned regulations. For example, to have a validation by a technical manager, the regular practice was to ask, orally, one’s supervisor located 2 meters away. In remote, became much more time-consuming : writing a message or organizing a meeting, which implies, among other things, waiting time, writing, priority management, agenda management, etc. Validators are bottlenecks. Remote work made this worst, explaining the productivity gap.
My job is to know and analyse work processes in order to transform and make them more efficient and resilient.
